Cal OES WMD Summit – CBRNe training events held on Coronado Island and at the Strategic Operations Center in San Diego, CA provided responders with two different terrorist attack events.
About 250 attended this Weapons of Mass Destruction Training, with most hazmat responders being either hazmat technician or hazmat specialist level supported by FBI field technicians, the National Guard — Civil Support Hazmat teams, ATF, San Diego Bomb Squad, and local sheriffs and police departments. The event’s key objective for the 2023 California WMD Summit was to better prepare local, state and federal agencies for CBRNE and WMD emergencies, and building relationships between representatives of those agencies. The event also succeeded as hands-on training for CBRNe incidents that allowed HAZMAT Resource to get specific equipment, gear and technologies in-hands and down range to make their future responses much more effective.

The Hazardous Materials Division, under the Cal OES Fire and Rescue Branch, coordinates the statewide implementation of hazardous materials accident prevention and emergency response programs for all types of hazardous materials incidents and threats. In response to any hazardous material emergency, the Division staff is called upon to provide state and local emergency managers with emergency coordination and technical assistance.
