The Dräger CMS gas analyzer is a portable gas detection system that utilizes colorimetric reactions. It can perform short-term or spot measurements of known gases and vapors.
The system consists of a substance-specific chip and an analyzer. These display the measurement result as a digital readout. The calibrated chip contains 10 measurements. Draeger equipped the analyzer with an integrated data recorder.

This new generation spot-check detection device is literally as easy as 1-2-3 to operate. Simply insert one of the 55 chemical specific Dräger-CMS-Chips into the Analyzer. Then, follow the instructions on the display as to when to move the slide switch.
The device typically analyzes TWA levels in 1-2 minutes. Upon completion of this process, the device indicates the concentration on the LCD display.
CMS: Chip Measurement System
The CMS combines substance specific measuring Chips with an electronic based Analyzer. This allows for an easy to use spot-measurement system.
Draeger filled the 10 capillaries in each Chip with a reagent system. Draeger based this reagent system on the company’s 60+ years of colorimetric chemistry expertise.

Fast Response Times
The CMS Analyzer requires no warm-up time. After performing a test, it can report results as quickly as 20 seconds. Higher concentrations pose a greater hazard. The CMS reports these faster than trace background levels. This increases the safety of using the CMS system.
It typically analyzes TWA and action levels within 1-2 minutes. After providing the measurement results, the CMS is immediately ready for another test or another Chip for further analysis of the environment.
Unequalled Accuracy
The expertise of Draeger’s worldwide experience in industrial gas measurement has come to focus in the CMS. Draeger combined this with a photo-optical controller. That measures the speed of the chemical reaction. This eliminates the human objectivity.
Other systems that rely on the volume of air. In contrast, the CMS pulls the same mass of air through the capillary every time. The mass flow controller automatically compensates for changes in atmospheric pressure. The device achieves accuracies of +/- 4 to 7% of measured value for most gases. A nationally accredited third party laboratory has validated CMS.
Chemical Specific Chips
When you need to know exactly what is there, CMS is the tool to provide those answers. Draeger chose the chemistry to provide the best results possible. The capillaries of several chips have multiple levels. This helps to eliminate cross sensitivity. It can also help to derive a specific measurement of the targeted chemical.
The CMS Chip
The Chip consists of 10 measurement capillaries filled with substance-specific reagent systems. Draeger printed the gas type, part number and batch number on the chip. The analyzer optics read the printed barcode on the chip.
The barcode contains information that the device requires to complete the measurement. This includes gas type, measuring range, and measuring time. Additionally, Draeger calibrated each chip during manufacturing. It is valid for two years.
Simplified Operation
The CMS is literally as easy to operate as 1-2-3. Making an analysis is as simple as turning the unit “on”.
To do this users
- move the slide to position 1.
- follow the plain language instructions on the display to load the Chip.
- move the slide selector to positions 2 and 3.
Operating the CMS couldn’t be easier because this is the exact same procedure for every Chip!
Upon completion of the analysis, the CMS Analyzer shows the concentration in the display. Unambiguous digital display of the concentration eliminates any misinterpretation of the results.
Simplified Maintenance
The CMS Analyzer does not require gas calibration! The CMS chip stores all calibration information on its bar code. When users insert it into the analyzer, it automatically downloads. Every time users switch the Analyzer on, it performs an electronic system self test. The device also performs a sampling system test before each test.
The device operates on alkaline batteries. This means that users need not worry about charging or battery memory. CMS makes gas detection simple.
DataRecorder
The internal data recorder stores up to fifty measurements. Each measurement includes the time/date, contaminant/concentration, and the sequential number in a series. Users can manually enter measurement location information (in alphabetical code). Users can recall and display the stored data on demand.
