The Detailed

Hazmat and other critical safety equipment involves meeting to specific requirements, certifications, and standards, all designed to prioritize safety. As we all know, managing equipment inventory and tracking can be challenging but let’s get your boots handled. Here is a detailed explanation of the dating and various standards that Tingley has consistently met over the years, providing a comprehensive understanding of their date code and standard markings.

  • On March 1, 2005, the ANSI Z41 reference was withdrawn and replaced by the ASTM F2413 Standard:
    • Hazproof Boots with a ANSI Z41 label were made prior to 2005.
NOTE: As of September 2023, any boots marked with ANSI Z41 are well beyond our specified 10 year shelf life.
  • The NFPA 1991 was revised in 2005 and again in 2016. NFPA labeling on the side panel of the boots requires the use of all four digits for the revision year. For example, NFPA 1991-2005 or NFPA 1991-2016:
    • Hazproof Boots with a NFPA 1991-2005 label were made between 2005 and Dec 31, 2015.
NOTE: Hazproof Boots with a NFPA 1991-2016 label were made in 2016 or afterward.
  • In 2022, the NFPA decided to combine several standards, including the NFPA 1991, into a single new standard designated NFPA 1990-2022:
    • Hazproof Boots with a NFPA 1990-2022 label were made starting in the second half of 2022.
  • The ASTM F2413 was revised in 2005, 2011, and most recently in 2018. The ASTM labeling on the side panel of the boots only requires only using the last two digits of the year. For example, ASTM F2413-05 references the 2005 revision.
    • Hazproof Boots with a ASTM F2413-05 label were made between 2005 and 2011.
    • Hazproof Boots with a ASTM F2413-11 label were made between 2011 and 2018.
    • Hazproof Boots with a ASTM F2413-18 label were made in 2018 or afterward.

The label on hazmat safety boots typically indicates the manufacturing date. Deciding on when your specific boots expire can be subjective. Have they been in contact with hazardous substances? Can they be effectively decontaminated? Are they being cleaned and stored properly?

So, do safety boots have an expiry date?

The average lifespan of regularly worn safety boots is typically between six months to two years. Many safety experts recommend replacing safety boots every six months, especially in challenging and hazardous environments. For unworn boots, their shelf life is generally considered to be 10 years from the date of manufacture.
