Radionuclides are identified using specialized radiation detection instruments such as handheld radioisotope identification devices (RIIDs) or portable gamma spectrometers. These tools detect gamma rays emitted by radioactive materials and compare the measured energy peaks to an internal nuclide identification library to determine the exact isotope.
Common methods and tools include:
- Using a handheld RIID for fast on-site nuclide identification
- Conducting radiation surveys to locate radioactive sources
- Matching gamma energy peaks to a radioisotope library
- Employing portable gamma spectrometers for spectral analysis
- Using quantitative analysis software for activity calculations
- Exporting data in formats like .n42 for further evaluation
A radionuclide identification device (RID) is a portable instrument used to detect and identify radioactive materials by analyzing the energy of emitted radiation. When radioactive isotopes, or radionuclides, decay, they release particles—often gamma rays—with unique energy signatures. The RID captures these signals and compares them against a built-in database to determine exactly which isotope is present.
These devices are widely used in emergency response, border security, nuclear facilities, and environmental monitoring. For example, a hazmat team might use an RID at the scene of an accident to quickly assess whether a radioactive source is involved, while customs agents use them to screen cargo for illicit or undeclared radioactive materials.
Radioactive isotopes are identified by detecting the radiation they emit and analyzing its energy. Each isotope gives off particles—usually gamma rays, sometimes alpha or beta—that have a specific energy signature. By measuring these energy levels with a detector, you can determine which isotope is present.
The most common method uses a gamma spectrometer or a radionuclide identification device (RID). These instruments capture the radiation and generate a spectrum—a kind of fingerprint—showing the energy peaks. The device then matches these peaks to known isotopes in its internal database.
In more advanced settings, high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors offer even higher resolution, allowing for very precise identification, especially when multiple isotopes are present.
