Hazmat zones, also known as control zones, are areas established at a hazardous materials incident to manage safety and the degree of hazard, typically categorized as hot, warm, and cold zones. 

Hot Zone (Exclusion Zone):
This is the area with actual or potential contamination and the highest potential for exposure to hazardous substances. 

  • Also known as: Exclusion Zone, Red Zone 
  • Activities: Where the actual response takes place, requiring full protective gear. 
  • No Bystanders Allowed: 
Warm Zone (Contamination Reduction Zone):

This is the transition area between the hot zone and the cold zone, where decontamination of personnel and equipment takes place. 

  • Also known as: Contamination Reduction Zone 
  • Activities: Decontamination, requiring protective gear. 
Cold Zone (Support Zone):

This is the uncontaminated area where emergency operations can be directed and supported, with no need for protective gear. 

  • Also known as: Support Zone, Green Zone 
  • Activities: Triage, stabilization, and treatment are performed here.
