Earth Ground Testers

Hazardous locations classified as Class I, II, and III (according to NEC and ATEX standards) demand strict control over electrical grounding to prevent arc flashes, sparking, and stray voltage issues. The Model 6422’s hazardous voltage detection feature provides an automatic warning when unsafe voltage is present, preventing measurements in dangerous conditions. The earth ground tester kit is especially critical for industries such as petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and grain processing, where airborne dust, vapors, or gases create a heightened risk of explosion.

Ground Resistance Tester Model 6422 (Digital, 3-Point)

What is the maximum resistance to ground?
The recommended maximum grounding resistance is 0.5 ohms (Ω). However, the ideal ground resistance is zero ohms.

Explanation
  • Grounding resistance is the sum of the resistance of the grounding body, the soil, and the contact between the two.
  • The goal is to have the lowest ground resistance that is economically and physically reasonable.
  • The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and IEEE recommend a ground resistance of 5.0 ohms or less.
  • The National Electric Code (NEC) recommends a system impedance to ground of 25.0 ohms or less.
  • Facilities with sensitive equipment should have a ground resistance of 5.0 ohms or less.
  • A low-impedance ground electrode can help minimize damage during a lightning strike.

You can measure grounding resistance using an ohmmeter, multimeter, or electrical safety analyzer.
