Types of Chemical Warfare Agents: Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are substances deployed in military or terrorist operations to harm or incapacitate individuals. They are classified based on their mechanism of action into six main categories: nerve agents, blister agents, choking agents, blood agents, incapacitating agents, and riot-control agents. There are many types of chemical warfare detectors, including handheld devices, laboratory-quality systems, and wearable detectors.

Toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) are substances used in industrial processes that can cause significant harm if released into the environment. They can exist as gases, liquids, or solids and pose risks such as being flammable, explosive, corrosive, or toxic to the respiratory system or blood, depending on the specific chemical. Examples include chlorine, ammonia, cyanide compounds, and some pesticides. They can usually be detected by various chemical sniffer devices.

Key points about TICs:

  • Industrial Use: Found in industries like manufacturing, agriculture, and chemical processing.
  • Mass Harm Potential: Their large-scale storage and use mean accidental releases can cause widespread harm.
  • Health Risks: Exposure can result in serious effects like respiratory issues, burns, or death.
  • Regulation: TICs are closely monitored and regulated to reduce the risk of accidental release.

The Joint Chemical Agent Detector (JCAD) is a handheld device used to detect chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemical vapors, and explosives:

  • Chemical Warfare Agents: Detects nerve agents like sarin and blister agents such as mustard gas.
  • Toxic Industrial Chemical Vapors: Capable of identifying specific industrial chemical vapors.
  • Explosives: Detects explosives like TNT, RDX, and EGN.
