Handheld Raman Spectrometers Assessment Report

Ranked #1 for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology

Raman Unknown Chemical Identification

With the Agilent SORS through-barrier capability we’ve dramatically increased safety by eliminating the necessity to open containers, thereby confining hazards and preserving evidence effectively. This proprietary capability empowers first responders to identify unknown solid, powder and liquid substances at the outset of an operation, mitigating potential escalation.

Quickly analyze nonmetallic, sealed containers such as colored and opaque plastics, glass, paper, wrapping, sacks, and fabrics. Exposed materials and samples in clear glass vials can also be analyzed with the Resolve vial holder.

Agilent Reachback Service

Agilent’s reachback service supports users with any spectroscopic queries related to the Resolve system. Our agilent spectroscopy raman experts can help analyze a scan or set of scans if your Resolve system provides inconclusive results.

  • Have not been provided with a match, despite obtaining a good quality spectrum
  • Have reason to believe that a match is incorrect
  • Have been given different results for more than one scan of the same substance under the same conditions
  • Require scientist confirmation of a match

In the Field - Applications

Agilent Handheld Raman Spectrometer Hazmat CBRN

Hazmat and CBRN

For the challenges of Hazmat and CBRN operations, Resolve’s SORS technology identifies solid and liquid hazardous materials concealed behind single or multiple barriers. Use time-in-suit and breathing gear efficiently by scanning through barriers.

Expolosives

Resolve can easily differentiate benign containers from those containing home-made, commercial, and military explosive materials all in approximately one minute, without any of the containers being opened.

Chemical Warfare Agent Detection Libraries

Standard Package [“Screening” applications]
The standard Resolve package includes a library focused on explosives, narcotics, and a limited selection of general chemicals. Since it lacks a comprehensive range of general chemicals, this package is best suited for scenarios where the primary goal is “screening” for specific threat materials, such as at a security checkpoint. In these situations, if an item is not identified as a threat, its composition is of no further concern. Note that deployments of this specific library is rare, as most situations require more extensive chemical detection capabilities found in other packages.

Toxic & Hazardous Chemicals Package [Hazmat, EOD, Customs/Border, Law Enforcement]
The Toxic and Hazardous Materials Package library includes approximately 7,000 hazardous and general chemicals, expanding on the Standard Package. This makes it ideal for most Hazmat operations and situations where identifying unknown substances is crucial. As the minimum recommended library, its primary advantage is the reduced cost, which can be a key factor with lower budgets or lesser capable devices are also being considered.

Comprehensive Package [Hazmat, EOD, Customs/Border, Law Enforcement]
The comprehensive library adds approximately another 6000 items to the Toxic and Hazardous package. These are a mixture of natural products, synthetic chemicals and pharmaceuticals. It should be deployed where the user is seeking to identify the widest possible range of materials.

NOTE: CWA Libraries require an export license and are only provided as part of the CWA resolve package. Factory Warranty is included as standard for one year (additional years may be purchased).

Raman spectroscopy stands as a versatile and nondestructive technique, offering intricate insights into chemical structure. Utilizing monochromatic laser light, typically at visible or near-infrared wavelengths, Raman spectrometers probe materials. Upon illumination, the majority of light undergoes Rayleigh scattering, retaining its energy. However, a small fraction of photons scatter with energy changes due to molecular vibrations—known as the Raman effect or Raman scattering. These Raman systems vibrational energies are characteristic of the molecules’ composition and structure, earning Raman the title of a chemical fingerprint technique. Employing highly sensitive detectors and spectrographs, Raman spectroscopy generates detailed and information-rich spectra from the collected light. These spectra often feature distinct and sharp peaks, facilitating identification of properties such as identity, concentration, phase, and morphology of the sample.

Conventional Raman spectroscopy involves illuminating a sample with a laser and detecting the scattered light using the same optical element (co-axial illumination). A variation of this technique, spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS), utilizes multiple measurements to probe the subsurface of a sample. SORS enables identification of materials within sealed, thick, colored, and opaque containers, enhancing the speed, efficiency, and safety of hazardous material identification, airport security liquids screening, and pharmaceutical raw material verification.
